Savanna

On the downwind side of hills, fires that swept across the prairies burned more slowly, with cooler flames. These conditions allowed fire-resistant trees like Bur Oaks to take hold. The mixture of shade and sun in these open woodlands, sometimes called savannas, provides home to an array of plants and animals not found elsewhere at Bluff Spring Fen.
